Day 7
August 19,1999
This was my big day to play golf at the Cape Breton
Highlands Links. And as if I had control of the weather, an hour before my Tee Time it
stopped raining and it held off till about an hour after I came off. A real gem of a
course, only too bad the yardage markings weren't correct.

It was a long course, my recommendation is get a cart. While
I walked and played, Matt went on a bike ride along a trail just adjacent to the course.

And since I was still out golfing, Michelle
then took the RV for a quick shopping trip to the local market and then went on a whale
watching trip.

While out on the water, Niki danced a jig for the crew. Matt
steered the boat, but no whales to be seen. They looked...

...and looked...

But they only saw

...Seagulls
and dolphins.
They tell me that there were some pretty waterfalls too...

...but hey, when everything around you is so
pretty... it's understandable to miss something like a whale.
By nightfall, we all had our days made, Niki
saw dolphins, Matt got to be Captain out in wide open Atlantic. (And as hard as Matt tried
to find someone who talked like 'a local' he finally met his match with the boat crew.
Here he learned that it's a -Sou'wester- , not a wind from the southwest). Michelle drove
the RV, no big deal she said. (Latter when I checked the gas mileage, it seems she got 8
miles/gallon while I got at best 5 miles/gallon). And for me well, I didn't golf all that
well, a 94 but the bright side was I did sink a 40' putt and I got to play a really nice
course.
Since the rain had started again, I looked
around for something to fix in the RV. Ah yes the horn. It had not really been working due
to problems with rust getting into the contacts, so I worked on that for a while. But
everytime I thought I had it cleaned up and back together, I would turn away, and it would
just start going off on its own. Boy those horns were loud, and it seemed everyone knew
where to look when they heard the noise - right at us.
I got my clubs and the extra bikes packed away
on the roof for an early start in the morning.
Another campfire (did I mention that both
nights the men were having real problems getting it going?) but each time it wasn't
without the ladies help. While I played guitar, we learned a new version of Twinkle,
Twinkle little star, from the little girl next door, Caitlin.
"Twinkle, Twinkle little bunny,
Hopping down the road today.
You better get off the road,
or I'll squish you like a toad..."
This day was a nice change, since it was the
first time we stayed at the same place for two nights. But now I began to think about
tomorrows drive around the rest of Cape Breton, and I'm not really sure how well I slept
that night.
