REJOICING IN
THE LORD

The exhortation to "rejoice in the Lord" appears twice in the New Testament, with identical wording in the Greek text. Both its occurrences are in the epistle to the Philippians. The first time it tells us to rejoice in the Lord finally (3:1), and the second time it tells us to rejoice in the Lord always (4:4).
Joy is part of "the fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22). It shows full and willing submission to the Lordship of Christ, confidence that He knows best, and gratitude for everything we have in and from Him. It is necessary in order to make our testimony effective, to attract souls to Christ. Joy distinguishes the Gospel from many false religions that make life gloomy.
True joy doesn't depend on circumstances. This epistle to the Philippians speaks of joy more than any other epistle; yet Paul wrote it while he was under house arrest, chained to a soldier day and night, and dependent on friends to bring him whatever he needed. We will have this joy if we are satisfied with Christ and the life He gives us.
