CHRIST'S SYMPETHETIC
SUPPORT Two Old-Testament characters had similar experiences. Early in life, they were in the thick of one of Israel's battles, on the front lines, and supported by a group in the background. Later on in life, it was they who gave support to those who were in the front lines. Each of these men is a type of Christ. Joshua is a type of Christ because of his name, which is the Hebrew form of the same name as "Jesus" (which is the Greek form). David is a type of Christ by being a direct ancestor of His, for Christ was born to "the house and lineage of David" (Luke 2:4). Also, the name "David" means "beloved;" and Christ is the Beloved of the Father.
Each of them is a picture of Christ, once in the thick of the spiritual battle on earth in Gethsemane and going to the Cross, and receiving support from heaven through the Father's witness (Matthew 3:17; 17:5), the Spirit's anointing (Isaiah 61:1; Matthew 3:16), and angels' ministering to Him (Matthew 4:11; Luke 22:43). But now He's seated at the right hand of God, sending us support from heaven. His experience at the battlefront on earth prepared Him for the support He now sends us (Hebrews 2:17; 4:15). 1.
