It pleased God, by the foolishness of preaching,
to save them who believe. --I Corinthians 1:21
We do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus
the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. --II Corinthians 4:5 |

Should anyone question the term "sermon," it is derived from a Latin word meaning a "stab" or "thrust"-- the idea being that the preaching of the Word is a stab with "the sword of the Spirit" (Ephesians 6:17b). The Lord's servant therefore need make no apology for "old-fashioned preaching;" it is God's chosen method, which bears His endorsement (I Corinthians 1:21). |
