HYMNS SUNG AT
THE LORD'S SUPPER The hymns we sing at the Lord's Supper, all dwell on worship of Christ, and remembrance of His work of redemption, particularly His suffering and death. We begin with a few well-known hymns, sung in most all evangelical circles. Next we introduce you to some hymns that are little known outside our assemblies, but that are sung to the tunes of hymns known almost universally. This will enable you to sing them in your mind. Then finally, we'll show you a few hymns for which even the tunes are scarcely known outside our assemblies, hoping that you will nevertheless appreciate the words.
SOME WELL-KNOWN HYMNS
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Lord of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid, it Lord, that I should boast Save in the cross of Christ, my God; All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down; Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an off'ring far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my heart, my life, my all. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alas! and did my Saviour bleed? And did my Sov'reign die? Would He devote that sacred head For such a worm as I? Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree! Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in, When the incarnate Maker died For man, His creature's sin. Thus might I hide my blushing face, While His dear cross appears; Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt my eyes to tears. ------------------------------------------------------------------- "Man of Sorrows," what a name For the Son of God who came Ruined sinners to reclaim! Hallelujah! what a Saviour! Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned He stood; Sealed my pardon with His blood; Hallalujah! what a Saviour! Guilty, vile and helpless, we; Spotless Lamb of God was He; "Full atonement!" can it be? Hallelujah! what a Saviour! Lifted up was He to die, "It is finished," was His cry; Now in heav'n exalted high; Hallelujah! what a Saviour! When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring, Then anew this son we'll sing: Hallelujah! what a Saviour! HYMNS WITH WELL-KNOWN TUNES (Well-known hymns or songs with same tunes given before each hymn) (to tune of: From Every Stormy Wind that Blows) Lord Jesus Christ, we seek Thy face; Within the veil we bow the knee; Oh, let Thy glory fill the place, And bless us while we wait on Thee. We thank Thee for the precious blood That purged our sins and bro't us nigh; All cleansed and sanctified to God, Thy holy name to magnify. Shut in with Thee far, far above The restless world that wars below, We seek to learn and prove Thy love, Thy wisdom and Thy grace to know. The brow that once with thorns was bound, Thy hands, Thy side, we fain would see; Draw near, Lord Jesus, glory crowned, And bless us while we wait on Thee. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (tune of: Love Divine, all loves excelling or: Let the Lower Lights Be Burning) Abba, Father, we approach Thee In our Saviour's precious name. We, Thy children, here assembling, Access to Thy presence claim. From our guilt His blood has washed us, 'Tis thro' Him our souls draw nigh; And Thy Spirit, too, has taught us "Abba, Father," thus to cry. Once as prodigals we wandered, In our folly, far from Thee: But Thy grace, o'er sin abounding, Rescued us from misery. Thou Thy prodigals hast pardoned, "Kissed us" with a Father's love; Welcomed us with joy o'erflowing, E'en to dwell with Thee above. Clothed in garments of salvation, At Thy table is our place; We rejoice, and Thou rejoicest, In the riches of Thy grace. "It is meet," we hear Thee saying, "We should merry be and glad; I have found My once lost children, Now they live who once were dead." "Abba, Father," we adore Thee, While Thy hosts in heav'n above E'en in us, now learn the wonders Of Thy wisdom, grace, and love. Soon before Thy throne assembled, All Thy children shall proclaim Abba's love, as shown in Jesus, And how full is Abba's name! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (to tune of: Jesus, Lover of My Soul) Nailed upon Golgotha's tree--- Faint and bleeding. Who is He? Hands and feet so rudely torn, Wreathed with crown of twisted thorn. Once He lived in heav'n above, Happy in His Father's love, Son of God, 'tis He, 'tis He, On the cross at Calvary. Nailed upon Golgotha's tree-- Mocked and taunted. Who is He? Scorners tell Him to come down, Claim His kingdom and His crown. He it was who came to bless, Full of love and tenderness. Son of Man, 'tis He, 'tis He, On the cross at Calvary. Nailed upon Golgotha's tree-- As a victim. Who is He? Bearing sin, but not His own, Suff'ring agony unknown. He, the promised sacrifice, For our sins has paid the price. Lamb of God, 'tis He, 'tis He, On the cross at Calvary. Throned in glorious majesty, Lord triumphant-- Who is He? E'en the same Who came to die, Now in heav'n, exalted high; With adoring hearts we now At His blessed feet would bow. Lord of all, 'tis He, 'tis He, 'Throned in glorious majesty! ------------------------------------------------------------------------
(to tune of: Drink to Me Only ) O Lord, it is Thyself to meet To this sweet feast we come; Like Mary, resting at Thy feet We learn of Thee alone: We well remember Thou hast said This do, remembering Me; So thus we take the wine, the bread, In memory of Thee. O Lord, we come, not for our need, Nor with our grief to Thee; But on the bread and wine to feed, And to remember Thee: Yes, to remember all Thy love, Remember all Thy woe, Remember Thou art now above, Yet in our midst below. O Lord, from Thee the bread we take, From Thy pierced hand the wind; In rest-- accepted for Thy sake-- Our meetness, Lord, is Thine: We praise Thee for this quiet hour Spent with Thyself alone, In which we feel the Spirit's power, And all His teachings own. O Lord, we come, for Thou art here; Enrich each memory; Thy faithful promise brings Thee near And gathers us to Thee: O body broken! poured our blood! Blest memories ever dear; Thou Son of man! Thou Lamb of God! How good to meet Thee here! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (to tune of: What a Friend We Have in Jesus ) Lamb of God! our souls adore Thee While upon Thy face we gaze; There the Father's love and glory Shine in all their brightest rays; Thy almighty pow'r and wisdom All creation's works proclaim; Heav'n and earth alike confess Thee As the ever great "I AM." Lamb of God! Thy Father's bosom Ever was Thy dwelling place; His delight, in Him rejoicing, One with Him in pow'r and grace; Oh, what wondrous and mercy! Thou did'st lay Thy glory by; And for us did'st come from heaven As the Lamb of God to die. Lamb of God, when we behold Thee Lowly in the manger laid, Wand'ring as a homeless stranger' In the world Thy hands had made; When we see Thee in the garden In Thine agony of blood-- At Thy grace we are confounded, Holy, spotless Lamb of God! When we see Thee, as the victim, Nailed to the accursed tree, For our guilt and folly stricken, All our judgment borne by Thee, Lord, we own, with hearts adoring, Thou hast loved us unto blood; Glory, glory everlasting Be to Thee, Thou Lamb of God! Lamb of God! Thou now art seated High upon Thy Father's throne; All Thy gracious work completed, All Thy mighty vict'ry won. Ev'ry knee in heav'n is bending To the Lamb for sinners slain; Ev'ry voice and harp is swelling, "Worthy is the Lamb to reign!" HYMNS LITTLE KNOWN OUTSIDE OUR ASSEMBLIES We trust you will appreciate the words Behold! behold the Lamb of God On the cross! On the cross! For us He shed His precious blood, On the cross. On the cross. O hear His all-important cry, "Eli, lama sabachthani?" Draw near and see the Saviour die, On the cross! On the cross! Behold His arms extended wide, On the cross! On the cross! Behold His bleeding hands and side, On the cross! On the cross! The sun withholds its rays of light, The heav'ns are clothed in shades of night, While Jesus wins the glorious fight On the cross! On the cross! By faith we see Him lifted up, On the cross! On the cross! He drinks for us the bitter cup, On the cross. On the cross. The rocks do rend, the mountains quake, While Jesus doth atonement make, While Jesus suffers for our sake, On the cross! On the cross! And now the mighty deed is done, On the cross! On the cross! The battle fought, the vict'ry won, On the cross! On the cross! To heav'n He turns triumphant eyes; "Tis finished" now, the conqu'ror cries, Then bows His sacred head and dies, On the cross! On the cross! But now He's ris'n, ascended, crowned, On the throne! On the throne! Heav'n's highest place for Him is found On the throne! On the throne! Our hearts we low in worship bow, And join, as one, to hail Him now: "Worthy, O Lamb of God, art Thou!" On the throne! On the throne! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gazing on the Lord in glory, While our hearts in worship bow, There we read the wondrous story Of the cross, its shame and woe. Ev'ry mark of dark dishonour Heaped upon the thorn-crowned brow, All the depths of Thy heart's sorrow, Told in answ'ring glory now! On that cross, alone, forsaken, Where no pitying eye was found; Now to God's right hand exalted, With Thy praise the heav'ns resound! Did Thy God e'en then forsake Thee, Hide His face from Thy deep need? In Thy face, once marred and smitten, All His glory now we read. Gazing on it, we adore Thee, Blessed, precious, holy Lord! Thou, the Lamb, alone art worthy-- This be earth's and heav'n's accord. Rise our hearts, and bless the Father, Ceaseless song e'en here begun; Endless praise and adoration To the Father and the Son! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ With harps and with viols There stands a great throng In the presence of Jesus, And sing this new song-- CHORUS: Unto Him Who hath lov'd us And wash'd us from sin, Unto Him be the glory For ever! Amen! All these once were sinners, Defiled in His sight, Now array'd in pure garments In praise they unite. He maketh the rebel A priest and a king, He hath bought us and taught us This new song to sing. |
