The World of Hollow Earth Expedition FAQ

Last updated August 24th, 2006

The Hollow Earth Expedition (HEX) roleplaying game has been in existence for about five months now officially, and there are many elements of the game system that have aspects to them that make the players, and GMs, think a little bit. This Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) page is designed to answer some of the commonly asked questions about one of the more complex HEX game elements - the worlds, both the Surface and the Hollow Earth.

The World of Hollow Earth Expedition Frequently Asked Questions

On the subject of "ubiquity," how ubiquitous is weird science in the setting, and what are the mechanics behind creating it?
Jeff Combos had this to say on the subject: "Weird science is there, but hardly ubiquitous. Not everyone has a ray gun or jet pack, for example. Those are rare and much sought after artifacts.

"So, in the base game, weird science creations are covered under the Artifact Resource, and the Equipment chapter includes several examples of Artifacts, including a Jet Pack, Robot, and a Drilling Machine. Each item has an Artifact level that represents how powerful and rare it is. A character (or group of characters) need to have enough Artifact levels to gain ownership of a weird science invention.

"That covers the "how do we get weird artifacts?" question. "How do we make weird artifacts?" is a question for another day (i.e., it's coming in a later supplement). Until then, I've listed enough weird science examples in the book that a Gamemaster or player can invent a new device to use in the game and figure out its Artifact level."

Special thanks to Jeff Combos, Melissa McNally, M. Sechin Tower, and the folks on the Hollow Earth Expedition (HEX) forums for their help in the compiling of this FAQ information.
