The Bloods were an all-girl, post no-wave punkfunk band From NYC, playing from 1979 through until 1982. The members included Adele Bertei (original Contortion and briefly Bush Tetra) on vocals; Annie Toone (keyboards & vox); Kathy Rey (guitar); Brenda Alderman (bass) and Kathleen Campbell (drums).

The Bloods put out one 7 inch called "Button Up" on the Au Pairs' EXIT records in 1981 (which ended up single of the week in the NME). The band also were on The Venus Weltklang compilation Flame Records together with The Slits, Kleenex, Malaria, and the Au Pairs from the first Women's Rock Festival in Berlin 1980. They also did the soundtrack for Lizzie Borden's indie classic feature Born In Flames, together with Red Crayola (Adele and Pat Place starred in the movie).

The Blood played a gazillion shows, sharing bills with with many famous names like The Clash, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders, the Slits, the Au Pairs, Gang of Four, Bush Tetras, Lydia Lunch, Adam Ant, The Go-Go's and Delta 5.

The band broke up after their second European tour. Annie Toone went on to form Idiotsavant in Amsterdam and London with Clare Hirst (Bellestars), the SF dykeabilly band The Bucktooth Varmints, and pioneer the art of the Drag King. Adele went on to record with Boy George, Thomas Dolby, Scritti Politti, Sophie B. Hawkins and her own dance 12 inches and indie films.

Recent news: The Bloods are on a compilation called New York Noise (as are the Bush Tetras) that came out in June 2003 that's selling well and has attracted interest from 2 labels about doing a Bloods retrospective cd. This release got a four star review in Rolling Stone, and good notices in Time Out London, plus great distribution.

Annie says: "...great thing is we're all back in touch and willing to reform, remaster or just ride the new wave of our 'no wave' becoming trendy again."

Rock on!
